They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but there is such a thing as a free share! I’ve got to admit, when I first heard about getting a free share for joining an investing app, I was intrigued.
I’m always a bit suspicious when something sounds too good to be true, so I decided to have a look for myself. That’s how I ended up trying Robinhood.
The first thing I discovered was that I didn’t have to receive a whole, expensive share of a company. Instead, I was given a fractional share. I deposited just £1 into my account and got over $7 in value. That’s a pretty good deal.
I chose Nvidia stock, but there are lots of companies to choose from, including Microsoft and Amazon. My free share was worth $7.43 when I received it.
Now, I’m not going to pretend that $7.43 is going to pay my mortgage! 😂 But I thought it was a pretty fun way to get started with investing, particularly because I hadn’t had to go out and spend my own money buying that first little bit of stock.
So what exactly is a fractional share?
This is the bit I found interesting.
Some shares can cost hundreds of dollars, which can make buying a whole share seem like a big commitment if you’re just starting out.
A fractional share means you own a small fraction of one share instead.
So my $7.43 wasn’t a whole Nvidia share; it was my little piece of one.
And that’s a nice way to get a feel for investing without needing a huge amount of money. I can now watch what happens to my little Nvidia investment and see how the value changes. If it goes up, my $7.43 becomes worth a little more. If it goes down, it becomes worth a little less.
It’s a very small amount, but it’s made investing feel much more real to me.

And yes, full disclosure: because it’s my referral link, I may receive a reward if you sign up and meet the relevant conditions too.
I just thought it was worth sharing because I genuinely found the whole thing quite interesting. You get a little piece of a real company, and suddenly the stock market doesn’t seem quite so complicated or inaccessible.
Just remember that once you’re investing your own money, the value can go down as well as up, so don’t invest more than you can afford to lose.
But if you’ve ever thought, “I’d like to try investing, but I don’t know where to start,” getting a small free share might be a pretty interesting place to begin.
Affiliate disclosure: This post contains my Robinhood referral link. If you sign up using my link and meet the relevant conditions, I may receive a reward. The reward offered to new customers is subject to Robinhood’s current terms and eligibility requirements.
