Free e-books, audiobooks and magazines

Would you like free e-books, audiobooks, newspapers and magazines? Free with no catch? Introducing BorrowBox.

If you love reading (or listening to audiobooks) but don’t feel like leaving the house or paying for every single book, BorrowBox is an absolute game-changer. It’s an app that lets you borrow ebooks and audiobooks from your local library. All you need is a library card, and you’re in. If you don’t have a library card, most local libraries will let you register online and give you a temporary ID to use. You can then use this to register with the BorrowBox service.

The app is really easy to use. You can search, borrow, and download books straight to your phone or tablet. It’s got lots of popular titles and new releases to choose from, plus everything syncs across devices, and you can listen offline.

No stress, no late fees, and no lugging books around. Just good books, whenever you want them.

Free E-books and Audiobooks 24/7

  • A big range of books and audiobooks
  • Easy-to-use app
  • Listen or read anywhere
  • Great for adults and kids
  • Unlike your local library, it’s open all the time

Libraries That Use BorrowBox

Most public libraries use Borrow Box. Here are just some of the libraries that offer BorrowBox. Check your local one, chances are it’s already on board!

🇬🇧 UK Libraries:

  • Birmingham
  • Manchester
  • Leeds
  • Glasgow
  • Edinburgh
  • Kent
  • Essex
  • Norfolk
  • Hampshire
  • Surrey
  • Cambridgeshire
  • Nottinghamshire
  • North Yorkshire
  • Most Scottish and Northern Irish libraries too

🇮🇪 Ireland:

  • Every public library across the country via Libraries Ireland

There is no cost to the reader to use Borrow Box; your local library covers the subscription costs. And I have found it invaluable since Everand decided to change its business model and stop the all-you-can-consume e-book and audiobook service.

What’s Available On BorrowBox?

BorrowBox offers e-books, audiobooks and a selection of newspapers and magazines.  My local library allows you to borrow up to 10 items at a time; however, different libraries have varying limits.

The downside is that just like the real library, some books will be out on loan.  However, you can set the search parameters to search on what’s available, and you can also reserve books you want to read.

100% Free E-Books and Audiobooks – All You Can Read!

There is no charge to use BorrowBox, unlike other e-book and audiobook services.  And so long as you stick to the limits set by the library on how many books you can borrow at a time, then it is a truly all-you-can-consume book service.

Since Everand changed its pricing structure (and, in my opinion, is now living on borrowed time), there are no real no-cost alternatives for avid readers apart from BorrowBox. The Audible Plus catalogue is truly excellent, but it does incur a monthly fee.  However, if you’re looking for a paid audiobook subscription, then this is the one I highly recommend.

Everamd/Scribd used to be my go-to for e-books and audiobooks.  But they got rid of the legacy plan and have introduced a new pricing model, which is, quite frankly, terrible value for money.  The new system is based on unlocks, is expensive and has no advantage over Audible, which is cheaper and of better quality.

You only have to read the latest reviews for Everand on TrustPilot, which are almost exclusively 1-star, to realise how many people hate the new model.  My prediction is that they will either have to change it back or genuinely face going out of business.

But back to Borrow Box.  It might not have the same number of premium titles available as Audible or Kindle Unlimited, but it does provide a solid selection that will cater to most tastes and reading styles.

There are also lots of children’s and young adults’ books and audiobooks, perfect for families.  And you can also save money on magazine subscriptions – and help save the planet by going paperless by reading the selection available on the app.  What’s not to like?

If you haven’t tried BorrowBox, you’re seriously missing out. It’s like carrying a library in your pocket, perfect for reading on the sofa, in the garden, or while out and about with the great selection of audiobooks.  Honestly, once you start using it, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.
